Born in China, Wilson went to the U.S. to study in 1984 and received his Master of Art degree with a major in Language and International Trade from Eastern Michigan University in 1987. Wilson successfully completed Leadership for Senior Executives offered by Harvard Business School in 2011. Prior to that and during the cultural revolution, Wilson spent seven years of his life, living and working on a farm, first growing rice, then raising chickens and later becoming a tugboat captain. He worked as a wood work technician and then an English teacher before he came to the U.S.
Wilson Zhu joined Gymboree in 2013 as the Chief Sourcing and Production Officer, reporting directly to the CEO. His responsibilities included global sourcing, production, product development, technical design and import logistics. In 2013, he was appointed the Chairman of the Board of Gymboree (China). Prior to Gymboree, Wilson Zhu served as the Executive Vice President, Private Brands and Global Sourcing at Michaels Stores Inc. He was a member of the Executive Committee, directly reporting to the CEO. Wilson was responsible for trend forecast, branding, private brand development, product development, industrial design, global sourcing, packaging, quality assurance and social responsibility as well as the company’s China strategies and initiatives.
